Things to do in Mal Pais | Costa Rica

Mal Pais, Costa Rica is the perfect place for people who like sports, nature, sun and beach. We are located 1km away from Playa Carmen and Santa Teresa Beach, in the most quiet part for you to enjoy. We recomend many things to do in Mal Pais and surrondings…

Kite Surf is not a common practice in Mal País and Santa Teresa but if you like we can help you get the proper equipment and find the right spot. In Mal País we get 15-20 knots cross onshore winds from January to April, during the high season. You’ll be able to catch a few good days per week with our help. Playa Carmen is just 1 km away from Pachamama Tropical Garden Lodge with the perfect setting to practice kitesurfing. We have certified instructors to teach you from the ground or professional level instructors if you want to learn a specific technique.
There are many choices depending on your skills in Playa Mal Pais, Playa Santa Teresa or Playa Hermosa with ideal surf conditions throughout the year also one of the most consistent surf spots in Costa Rica.
Surfing Malpais: Playa Carmen, is on the edge between Malpais and Santa Teresa and is ideal for every level of surfing, depending on the tide and the size of the waves. Low tide is perfect for beginners and if you are intermediate or advanced surfer you can try mid to high tide. Rip tides can carry you out or toward the rocks so be careful, It is easy to see the rocks at low tide. Playa Carmen is less powerful than alternative surf spots on the Central Pacific.
Surfing Santa Teresa: Santa Teresa Beach is 1 km north from Playa Carmen and Mal Pais. There are several surf spots in the way, and each one is separated by rocks visible at low tide. You can walk north to Brunela and La Lora beaches for a hollower wave that breaks faster and is not suitable for beginners.
Playa Hermosa: Playa Hermosa it’s about 1/2 hour by car from Pachamama Tropical Garden Lodge. Low tide is incredible easy for beginners because of the flat bottom where the white water maintains for longer. These waves are excellent for intermediate and advanced surfers as well. Rocks are visible at north.
Horseback Riding on the beach is an essential facet of the whole vibe here. If you have children who like horses, this will be an unforgettable experience for them. Or, if you simply love horses, or you want to try horseback riding for the first time, the leaders of these tours are well trained, and you’ll have a wonderful time.
We can help you get your ride at sunset, or take a horseback riding tour through Mal Pais and into the hills of Cabo Blanco Natural Reserve. This tour will take you through jungle and valleys, and across rivers. This particular tour leaves at early mornings and late afternoons.

Fishing Tour The Pacific Ocean in the Mal Pais area provides exciting fishing, tuna, wahoo, roosterfish, mackerel, mahi mahi and snapper being caught regularly. We will help you to get a boat or panga, and an experienced guide will bring you to the best fishing spots, where a good catch is almost guaranteed!
Back in the fisher port, the guide will clean your catch and you can take it home to prepare a memorable dinner.
Tortuga Island Is located on the Nicoya Peninsula Gulf. Is one of the best snorkeling and diving locales off the Peninsula, and delights visitors with its diverse marine life.
Most day trips to the island are aboard by boats that depart from nearby destinations. Full-day tours normally include roundtrip transportation, bilingual guide, snorkeling or scuba diving, snacks, and a delicious BBQ lunch on the beach.
Scuba Diving Is one of the best ways to have a glimpse of the beautiful under-water marine life. Ideal temperatures, wide variety of marine life and giant schools of fish attract large number of tourists around the world every year.
The diving boat is located on the fishermen´s bay in Mal Pais or Montezuma, where they departure to different dive points (Montezuma, Mal Pais, Santa Teresa and Playa Hermosa) according to the level of the divers. In these points you will be able to see a very extended sea life, beautiful reefs in warm waters without the need of uncomfortable wetsuit in a safe environment.

ATV Rental turned to be very popular in Mal Pais, Santa Teresa Beach and Playa Hermosa. It’s not so expensive like a car and allows you to move everywhere from the beach to the mountain, you can go even further to Cabuya, Cabo Blanco, Montezuma or Cobano.
If you want to go north right at Playa Hermosa there are two roads to Playa Manzanillo – Bello Horizonte, the scenic way follows the beach, you just go left to Playa Hermosa until you reach the last entrance to the beach then turn right and follow that path crossing several rivers you will find Playa Manzanillo. The other way is going right and up at Playa Hermosa Crossroad all trough Santiago Hills, you can not miss it. This is a well maintained road that connects several parts of our community.
Once you get to Playa Manzanillo, 500m meters ahead you will find Atardecer Dorado Restaurant and a supermarket. You can keep going north crossing the Bongo and the Ario Rivers trough the beach always in low tide or you can cross trough the bridge turning right at Atardecer Dorado 1km until the Soccer Field.

The Mal Pais Canopy Tour Is based here in a farm with more than 200 different tree species, at the entrance of the Cabo Blanco Absolute Nature Reserve. The whole area is surrounded by rich tropical forest and diverse wildlife as well as many birds.
