There are many choices depending on your skills in Playa Mal Pais, Playa Santa Teresa or Playa Hermosa with ideal surf conditions throughout the year also one of the most consistent surf spots in Costa Rica.
Playa Carmen, is on the edge between Malpais and Santa Teresa and is ideal for every level of surfing, depending on the tide and the size of the waves. Low tide is perfect for beginners and if you are intermediate or advanced surfer you can try mid to high tide. Rip tides can carry you out or toward the rocks so be careful, It is easy to see the rocks at low tide. Playa Carmen is less powerful than alternative surf spots on the Central Pacific.
Surfing Santa Teresa:
Santa Teresa is 1 km north from Playa Carmen and Playa Malpais. There are several surf spots in the way from Playa Mal Pais to Playa Santa Teresa, and each one is separated by rocks visible at low tide. You can walk north to Brunela and La Lora beaches for a hollower wave that breaks faster and is not suitable for beginners.
Playa Hermosa it’s about 1/2 hour by car from Pachamama Tropical Garden Lodge. Low tide is incredible easy for beginners because of the flat bottom where the white water maintains for longer. These waves are excellent for intermediate and advanced surfers as well. Rocks are visible at north.
